Mandy and I always try to do an all girls trip at least for a few days each summer. Together in the past 10 years or so we’ve hiked the West Coast Trail, the North Coast Trail, biked in Hood River, kayaked the Broken Group Islands and Desolation Sound, and done tons of local hikes closer to home. We had always wanted to conquer the Stein Valley, which is a massive Provincial Park just east of Whistler.
Last year we attempted. It was just the two of us for some reason, as I think it was tough to rally the women into Grizzly territory, and we were a little last minute in our planning. What we didn’t expect was to be followed into the trail by a shirtless drunk man at 10 in the morning. The hairs on the back of our necks were in full attention, so we listened to those alarming guts of ours and headed back towards home. I don’t know about you, but being a woman alone in the wilderness with no one around for miles, except for a creepy drunk man, kind of freaks me out. Everything happens for a reason though right? So instead of galavanting in the Stein Valley for 5 days, we hiked all around Whistler, AND got to enjoy some cold beers at our campsite after every day hike.
This year, we are going to try it again. But we’ve learned. We’ve recruited another. Our original plan went from 5 emergency nurses down to 3 + our dog, but we still get 3 nights under the stars (and a few thundershowers by the looks of it) with 3 bottles of wine. It doesn’t get much better than that!
If at first you don’t succeed, do it again! And bring more people to laugh with.
