Day 14 – Time is one of the most precious gifts you can give

Sometimes it’s easy to think that the bigger the present, the better it is.  That big box wrapped in a bow must have something GREAT in it??  Right?  But that’s not always the case.  Sometimes, the most precious gift we can give someone doesn’t come wrapped in a bow.  Rather, it comes in the form of laughter, smiles, sometimes comfortable silence.  It comes with spending time with someone – giving the gift of our time and choosing to spend it with someone special.  No matter what you try to do, you can’t get more of it.  Time is precious.  And we only have so much of it.  Only so much of it to give to ourselves and to give to other people.  Time is one of the most precious gifts you can give, as well as receive.

This weekend, Clori and I headed up to Joffre Lakes – Clori’s first time EVER camping in the back country.  Happy 30th birthday to my bestest Nursing friend!  A memory we will never forget!  I’m happy to say that Clori is now addicted (just like me).  She admitted that it always looked intimidating, but after trying it admits that it has changed her life.  She’s hooked.  She found it surprisingly easy to do.  Unsure of what to bring on a camping trip?  Check out this post.  Winter camping, but you get the idea.

The experience I have whilst backpacking is indescribable.  I can’t get enough of it.  Over the two days, I don’t think I’ve ever heard more of, “THIS IS AMAZING” and “I LOVE MY LIFE” and “PINCH ME” and “MAN I LOVE THIS!”.  So, So Good.  You have to try it.  Smile burn marks + scratches from attempting to do yoga on pointy rocks near the lake and unfortunately falling in.   What I will do for yoga. (Note to self – don’t expect to get a flat spot showing up at 7pm on the first sunny Saturday of the summer. We made friends with the rocks underneath our tent – surprisingly it turned out to be pretty comfy!)

It makes me so happy to be able to share this hobbie with the people in my life that I love.  To share such a bonding experience in nature – priceless.  Best part is, it’s FREE.  Once you have all the gear, you’re good to go.  (A JT tip – don’t cheap out on the gear.  Get the good stuff.  You’ll be glad when you don’t have to replace it every 2 years.  The stuff lasts a life time if you treat it right).

Give your time.  Time is so precious.  To me, it is my most valued gift – both giving and receiving.  If someone is giving me their time, I KNOW how much it means, because we all know how limited our time can be. So happy birthday Clorinda!  I’m so glad to have shared this past weekend with you! And I can’t stop thinking about the next time I get to go back out there.  Life can’t get much better than this.  Or can it?! :)

Smile with your heart!

  1. SO INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! Wow! I am putting that destination on my bucket list!
Such a sweet, thoughtful birthday gift for your friend. It’s amazing how giving unselfishly of one’s time has such huge rewards. What a grand adventure! Happy summer!!!

  2. Wow! What a beautiful camping destination! Way to spread the love of backcountry adventure to you friend…
I’m fairly new to backpacking (thanks to my husband). I grew up going on horse pack trips. (They are nice because the horses do all -or at least most of- the work, you can take a lot more stuff, and you can go a lot faster and farther in a day!)
But now I do both! :) It doesn’t matter how I get to the beautiful mountains- all that matters is that I get there!!!

  3. And now I want Kraft Macaroni and Cheese! :)

  4. Jen,
This is absolutely beautiful!! The colour of the lakes is UNBELIEVABLE! So want to go here!
    From another Jenn T!
