As I was coming home from the gym the other morning, I noticed there were a few stopped cars in front of me on the other side of the road. I saw a guy on the ground surrounded by probably 5 or so people. My instinct? Pull over, and get to it as fast as I can – gloves in hand. When I showed up to the scene, the guy on the ground was already c-clamped (his cervical spine was immobilized) by one of the good Samaritans and had probably been there for only a few minutes. He was okay. My adventure wildeness medicine skills weren’t needed, but I was ready to use them.
Out of the 5 people that were there, within about 3 minutes of this accident happening, a fireman was holding the patients head, a doctor was on the phone calling 911, a military medic was beside the patient treating him for shock and there was myself, a nurse, running to the scene as well. Funnily enough, the doctor was one from the hospital I work at who knew me by name. Small world.
Anyways. I can’t explain to you what’s in me that makes me run to emergencies. I wish I could understand it myself. Then I might not think I’m so crazy. All I know is that something inside of me loves it. I’m passionate about it. Passionate about helping people and passionate about learning what has happened in order to try and fix it as fast as possible. And. Those 5 people who were one minute minding their own business and the next, helping someone in a life threatening situation – they too share the same passion as me. I’m sure they can’t explain it either. It’s just in us. It just is.
That morning, I ran towards my passion. What I found were kind, caring, like minded people – who even knew me by name. Who just want to help. It felt good wanting to and being ready to help. It felt even better knowing there were so many similar people wanting to do the same.
Often when you start out at something, you may feel that you are in it alone. You might even believe yourself to be crazy for loving something so much. But keep on going. Keep on running towards what you love. Don’t worry about what other people think and definitely don’t worry about understanding why. Just do. When you run towards it with everything you have, you will find great, GREAT people there who too have run from all different and unique places to get to that exact spot. Creating a mosaic of personalities, of relationships, of experiences, all focusing on the same result. The same passion.
In the words of Robin Sharma:
“the secret of happiness is simple: find out what you truly love to do and then direct all of your energy towards doing it. If you study the happiest, healthiest and most satisfied people of the world, you will see that each and every one of them has found their passion in life, and then spent their days pursuing it. This calling is almost always one that, in some way, serves others. Once you are concentrating your mental power and energy on a pursuit that you love, abundance flows into your life, and all of your desires are fulfilled with ease and grace.”
Run towards your passion. There are only great things waiting for you there. Trust me.
Smile with your heart
